Local ladies knit woolly wonders for local poppy display

A group of ladies from Churchill Retirement Living’s Stokes Lodge in Camberley have been busy knitting remembrance poppies for a local church.

The ladies have knitted over 1,000 poppies for an exhibition being held at All Saints’ Church in Lightwater to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War next year. It takes inspiration from the major art installation Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red at the Tower of London, which filled the Tower’s famous moat in 2014, with each poppy representing a British military fatality during the war.

Several Owners at Stokes Lodge had already formed a weekly Knit and Natter Group where they meet in the Owners’ Lounge to chat and knit woolly supplies, when they decided to take on the challenge to create hundreds of poppies for the display, which will go on show at the church next year ahead of the centenary.

Linda Selway, Lodge Manager at Stokes Lodge, said: “The ladies find it so rewarding to come together and knit, and have put so much time and effort into this project. They have done a fantastic job contributing to make this a very special reminder to all of the great sacrifices made by those who lost their lives during the war.”

Stokes Lodge comprises 61 one and two bedroom apartments in the heart of Camberley. The apartments boast spacious rooms throughout and are an ideal combination of design and functionality.
