When newlyweds Stella (29) and Jakob (30), decided to buy their first home, the top priority was finding a property with enough space so they could both work from home when required. However they wanted to stay in London where high prices usually mean compromising on size, quality or location \u2013 or all three. Thanks to shared ownership, the couple could afford to buy a much bigger property than if they had bought it outright and didn\u2019t have to sacrifice quality or location either; the stylish 65 sq. ft., two-bedroom apartment they bought at SO Resi Brixton is located in one of London\u2019s most popular hotspots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stella\ncomments: \u201cWe\u2019d been renting a one-bedroom flat in Ladbroke Grove which was\nvery cramped. We\u2019re both freelance graphic designers and often we work from\nhome at the same time, which was very difficult with so little space. Shared\nownership with SO Resi was key to helping us to buy the kind of property we\nwanted, without waiting forever to afford it.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Shared\nownership allows you to buy a share of your home, typically between 25 per cent\nand 75 per cent, and to add more shares in future if you wish. The deposit and\nmonthly mortgage are smaller than they would be if you bought your home\noutright because they are based on the size of the share purchased rather than\nthe full value of the property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stella and Jakob had been saving hard and their savings were boosted by gifts of money from their wedding. They purchased a 25 per cent share of their two-bedroom apartment for \u00a3131,250 (full market price \u00a3525,000) and put down a deposit of \u00a320,000, which was higher than the ten per cent deposit required.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jakob says: \u201cEach month we pay around \u00a3950 for the\nmortgage, \u00a3450 for the payment to SO Resi on the share we don\u2019t own and around\n\u00a3230 in service charges. Our monthly outgoings are only \u00a330 more than when we\nwere privately renting a one-bedroom apartment for \u00a31,600 \u2013 which was money\ndown the drain. The space is much bigger, far better quality and it\u2019s given us\na start on the property ladder. It\u2019s definitely great value.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The couple have settled in and are thrilled with the extra space. Stella explains: \u201cThe second bedroom gives us flexibility and we have much more living space and also a balcony. We\u2019ve divided the living space into areas for working and relaxing, which makes it easier to keep tidy and life a lot calmer.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jakob adds: \u201cThe design of our apartment is great, especially the floor-to-ceiling windows which make it very light. We love it here – the development has a young professional vibe and we\u2019re looking forward to getting to know our neighbours.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

SO Resi Brixton is set in landscaped gardens in a quiet residential area, five-minutes\u2019 walk from Brixton\u2019s vibrant centre. It takes approximately eight minutes to walk to Brixton tube and trains reach Oxford Street in just 11 minutes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stella says: \u201cWe enjoy walking to the tube through the\nmarket and when the stalls are being set up in the morning there\u2019s a real\ngo-getter atmosphere. We\u2019re very close to the village and it\u2019s fun getting to\nknow the cocktail bars, restaurants and many other attractions in the area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For quality time together, Stella and Jakob can head down to Brixton\u2019s popular Brockwell Park where they often enjoy a game of frisbee, or work out in their local gym.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jakob concludes: \u201cFrom visiting SO Resi Brixton for\nthe first time, to moving in to our new home, it took only two months and the\nbuying process was very straightforward. Our families live overseas and owning an\napartment makes us feel much more settled and grounded. I\u2019d definitely\nrecommend shared ownership to young couples like us \u2013 it\u2019s an easy way to get\non the property ladder with the flexibility to buy more of your home in\nfuture.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
