A local couple have won a competition to name Churchill Retirement Living\u2019s new development on King Street in Maidstone after delving into the town\u2019s history.<\/p>

Brian and Grace Love, who have lived in the Maidstone area for 76 years, were presented with a cheque for \u00a3100 at a naming ceremony for the new King\u2019s Lodge development in the town.<\/p>

Mrs Love said: \u201cWe wanted to look back at the history of the site where the new development is and find out exactly why the road was named King Street. Our granddaughter helped us investigate and after researching the history we discovered that King George III rode along this street in 1799. He was visiting Mote Park to inspect 3,000 assembled troops of the Kent Volunteers, a local militia trained to defend the county from a possible invasion by Napoleon. We thought this was a really interesting connection and we\u2019re thrilled to have won!\u201d<\/p>

Anne Scherrer, regional marketing manager for Churchill Retirement Living, said: \u201cChurchill Retirement Living likes to involve the local community in choosing the names for its developments and often does so by running a competition asking for suggestions. We received a vast number of entries for the Maidstone development but we particularly liked the local historical connection that Mr and Mrs Love\u2019s entry had.\u201d<\/p>

King\u2019s Lodge, which is currently under construction, is located just to the edge of the town centre and will comprise 53 private, self-contained apartments that are specially designed for retired Owners, with features such as a video-entry system, lift to all floors, a 24 hour care and support system, and a Lodge Manager.<\/p>

Communal facilities include an Owners\u2019 Lounge, Guest Suite and landscaped gardens. Like all Churchill Retirement Living developments, the location has been chosen for convenience and is within easy walking distance of the wide selection of shops and amenities of Maidstone town centre and has good public transport links.<\/p>
